Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis

Former Brown University Assistant Coach and Salve Regina Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis is the new head women's basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Van Voorhis will succeed Mick Klitzner, effective July 1st. She was hired after a national search that was conducted when the position was made full-time, and is the first full-time head women's basketball coach at UMass Dartmouth since Judy Sullivan completed a 16-year stint at the end of the 1992-93 season.

Van Voorhis joins the Corsairs after a year as an assistant coach at Brown. She spent a year with the Bears after compiling a record of 143-51 in seven seasons as the head coach at Salve Regina University. Her teams at SRU won four Commonwealth Coast Conference championships, advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships on each occasion. Following the 2001-2002 season, Van Voorhis was named CCC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year and was nominated as New England Women's Basketball Coach of the Year, and she was named Cox Media Rhode Island Women's Basketball Coach of the Year following the 2006-2007 season. While at Salve, she led her teams to four 20-win seasons, six winning campaigns, and they improved from a 12-13 record during her first year to a 24-5 mark in her second.

An native of Burlington, MA, Van Voorhis graduated from Millis High School and played basketball for two seasons at Springfield College. Following her graduation, she began her career at Western New England College, serving as an assistant coach for two seasons before moving on to Ithaca as an assistant coach during the 1999-2000 campaign. While she was at Ithaca, the Bombers went 21-7, were co-champions of the Empire Eight Conference, and also won the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York championships.

"I'm excited to be a head coach again, and excited about this position," said Van Voorhis. "There are a lot of good selling points for UMass Dartmouth. The university is in a good location, there is great support from the administration, and a lot of the academic majors are recognized for being some of the best in New England. It's an exciting time, and there are opportunities for a lot of firsts. We will have the chance to make our mark not only in the conference, but also in New England. The resources that are available will make the student-athletes feel that the program is important, and it will help them get excited about the program."

Van Voorhis said that her last season as an assistant at Brown was time well spent. "At Brown, I worked for Jean Burr, who has been a head coach for 20 years, and I was like a sponge," Van Voorhis said. "I was a head coach early in my career, and it was good to step back, almost like a self check. I took a lot from that experience, and I'm excited to bring a lot of new ideas back to my role as a head coach."

"We are thrilled to have Amanda Van Voorhis join UMass Dartmouth as the new head women's basketball coach," said UMass Dartmouth Director of Athletics Ian Day. "She's exactly the type of coach we were searching for. Amanda brings with her not only a proven track record as a successful head coach, but also a commitment to providing a positive collegiate experience for the student-athletes."
