Head Baseball Coach Robert Curran
Long-time UMass Dartmouth assistant baseball coach Robert Curran, Jr. was named the Corsairs’ head baseball coach prior to the 2005 season. A 16-year assistant and former Corsair baseball player, Curran succeeded Bruce Wheeler who retired last spring after a 33-year career at UMass Dartmouth.
“Bob Curran is a very good baseball coach and someone who can maintain and build on the success we have enjoyed in that sport for many years,” said UMass Dartmouth Athletic Director Robert Mullen in making the announcement. “As a player first and then later as a coach, no one knows more about the UMass Dartmouth baseball program than he does and that will provide an important amount of stability to the program following Coach Wheeler’s retirement.”
After playing for Wheeler and the Corsairs as an undergraduate in the mid-1980’s, Curran joined the coaching staff in 1988. He has served a variety of duties including hitting coach, third base coach and recruiting coordinator in recent years. Curran is a 1999 graduate of UMass Dartmouth.
“I am very happy to succeed Coach Wheeler as the head coach of UMass Dartmouth baseball,” said Curran. “We have had an incredible amount of success over the last 30 years and I hope that I can build on the program’s past success. UMass Dartmouth has an excellent reputation in baseball throughout New England and nationally within Division III. The Little East Conference is one of the best baseball leagues in the country and we have to do everything we can to be competitive."
