Cathy "CJ" Houtman enters her fifth season (21-74) as head women's basketball coach at UMass Dartmouth. A 1986 graduate of UMass Dartmouth, Houtman was an assistant coach under Judy Sullivan for six seasons before taking over as head coach prior to the 1993-94 season.

Houtman is considered by many as the finest women's basketball player in Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth, history.

A 1992 inductee into the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Hall of Fame, Houtman is the Corsairs all-time career leading scorer with 1,323 points in three seasons. She also holds SMU/UMass Dartmouth records for most points in a game (39), most points in a season (591), career field goals (532) and career scoring average (19.7 per game). Houtman is one of only three players in the program's history to score more than 1,000 points.

Prior to taking the assistant coaches' position following her graduation from UMass Dartmouth, Houtman was the women's freshman basketball coach at New Bedford High School for a season.

Houtman is employed by the New Bedford Public School System as an elementary school teacher.

ASSISTANT COACH - KENNY JOHNSON AND CARLA JOHNSON

Sitting alongside Coach Houtman on the Corsairs' bench for a third season will be the husband and wife assistant coaching team of Kenny and Carla Johnson.

Kenny, who has also been an assistant coach for the Corsairs' football program, joined his sister's staff two seasons ago as an assistant coach for the second half of the season. In addition to his game-day duties on the bench and at practice, Kenny has also done much of the high school scouting as well.

Carla is an experienced basketball player herself, who joined the Corsairs' program at the two years ago. She served as a volunteer assistant three seasons ago and was moved up to assistant coach for the 1995-96 season.
