Head Softball Coach Kelly Roy

A member of the Corsair Hall of Fame was named the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's new head softball coach on October 6, 2006.

Kelly Roy, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003 after starring at UMass Dartmouth for four years and graduating in 1998, will join the Corsairs, effective immediately. She replaces Holly Morris, who served as interim head coach last spring.

Roy starred at Case High School in Swansea, MA and then at UMass Dartmouth between 1993 and 1996, where she helped lead the Corsairs to an 84-36 record and four post-season tournaments, including the 1994 New England Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III title.  A three-time Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III New England All-Star, Roy earned first team honors twice and second team honors once. She was also twice named a New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association All-Star, was named second team All-Region by the National Softball Coaches Association, was first team All-Conference in the Little East, and was twice named LEC Player of the Week.

Beginning her coaching career after graduating from UMass Dartmouth, she assisted with the softball programs at Case and at Diman Regional Vocational High School in Fall River and served as an interim assistant coach at UMass Dartmouth in the spring of 2004. She has also coached field hockey at Case for the past nine years, where she is presently the head field hockey coach and works as a teacher's assistant while currently pursuing her master's degree and full teaching certification.

"I've wanted to get back into coaching softball, but I had such a tight schedule, I didn't have the time to pursue it," said Roy. "I enjoyed myself when I did it here two years ago, and I want to coach at the collegiate level. I know that we had our first winning season in 10 years last year, and I was on the last winning team that we had before that. I'm excited about getting started, and I'm hoping we can get to post-season play again and see where it takes us."

"We're excited to have Kelly back aboard here at UMass Dartmouth," said Corsair Director of Athletics Louise Goodrum. "I believe that her sincere commitment to our softball program will take us to the next level."
