The 1998-99 season marked Lynn Sheedy's first as women's basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Sheedy came to UMass Dartmouth following a ten-year stint as Athletic Director at Salve Regina University and six
years as its women's basketball coach. Prior to her work at Salve Regina, where she also served as Assistant Dean
of Students for two years, Sheedy enjoyed a successful career as a player and coach at Providence College.
During her ten years at Salve Regina, Sheedy increased the number of varsity sports from 12 to 21, while also compiling
a 72-34 record as women's basketball coach. Her teams won Commonwealth Coast Conference championships in 1986,
1988 and 1989, and she was twice selected the CCC Coach of the Year. Sheedy's team earned the school's first ECAC
post-season bid following the 1988-89 season. She also served as head soccer coach at Salve Regina University for
two years, winning a conference title in 1990.
As a player, and later as a coach, Sheedy enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Providence College. She
served as head basketball coach at PC from 1983-85, following three years as an assistant. Sheedy compiled a 33-21
record in women's basketball at PC and was the Friars' head softball coach for three seasons.
Sheedy had an outstanding career as an athlete at Providence College, becoming one of the first women athletes
to receive a full athletic scholarship. She participated in field hockey, basketball and softball and was named
Providence College's Women's Athlete of the Year in 1979. Following her graduation in 1980, she was a fifth-round
draft choice in the Women's Professional Basketball League.
In 1990, Sheedy was the first female athlete ever inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame.
