- Lack of scoring in overtime leaves Corsairs eighth in Little East Conference and 3-13 overall for 2001
(Dartmouth, MA) -- Three overtime losses, including two to Little East Conference opponents, left UMass Dartmouth out of the LEC Tournament field as the 2001 season came to a close. Coach Marilyn Ritz's Corsairs finished the season with a 3-13 overall record and eighth in the LEC with a 2-7 mark.
Although the Corsairs ended up on the short end of a 1-0 LEC overtime loss to Eastern Connecticut State, UMass Dartmouth came up with one of its best games of the season against the Warriors. After playing to a scoreless tie, UMass Dartmouth saw any hopes of getting into the LEC Tournament go by the boards when Eastern Connecticut came up with the game-winner in overtime. The Corsairs also came up short in a pair of 3-2 overtime losses to Worcester State and MIT.
UMass Dartmouth was led by the all-around play of senior captain Kristen Greene (Medfield, MA) who was selected as the team Most Valuable Player for a second time. One other positive note for the Corsairs was the play of junior defensive back Erin Dziedzic (Palmer, MA), UMass Dartmouth's lone selection to the All-Little East Conference squad for 2001. Dziedzic was an LEC Second Team selection and was also the Corsairs' Most Valuable Defensive player for the season.
With the loss of this season's three co-captains to graduation, Greene, Jaclyn Michalos (Norwood, MA) and Deanne White (Essex, MA), the Corsairs had several younger players turn in solid performances during the 2001 season. Sophomore forward Alexandra Wildes (Carver, MA) led UMass Dartmouth in scoring with three goals and three assists for nine points. In the 16 games she played, Wildes was tied for the team-high in shots on goal with 28 and one of her three goals proved to be a game-winner.
Junior forward Jennifer Davis (Westford, MA) was second in team scoring with a team-high four goals for eight points on 20 shots on goal. Greene was third in scoring with a pair of goals and assists for six points followed by first year player Lauren Izzicupo (Stoneham, MA) (two goals, one assist, five points), sophomore forward Wendy Crowther (Dartmouth, MA) (2-0-4), Dziedzic (1-1-3) and first year forward Tracy Olearczyk (Three Rivers, Ma) (1-0-2)
In goal for the 2001 season, Melisa Larrivee (Fall River, MA) and Meghan Apostolec (Plymouth, MA) shared the Corsairs' netminding duties. In 10 games, Apostolec, in her sophomore season, had a 2.47 goals against average and a 1-9 record. A first-year player for the Corsairs, Larrivee appeared in six games with a 2-4 record with a pair of shutouts to her credit and a 2.12 goals against average.
