NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – It took nearly 70 minutes for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team to get a shot past Becker goalkeeper Michelle DeSantis Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Caitlin DiCecca’s (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) goal with 49 seconds remaining was the only goal of the game for the Corsairs, who fell to Becker, 2-1, at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
DiCecca scored from short range, converting a pass from senior midfielder Robin Dziedzic (Palmer, MA/Palmer HS). But the Hawks held off UMass Dartmouth the rest of the way.
Brittany Palfy opened the scoring for BC, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 20:29 mark. Elizabeth Hatheway assisted. A goal on a penalty stroke by Becker’s Mariah Seames with 7:15 remaining in the first half made it 2-0.
“We played well, but we had trouble getting our shots off, and finishing,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jen Burrows. “We did a good job keeping the ball in their half of the field. Becker is a good team, and they kept us from scoring.”
UMass Dartmouth out shot the Hawks, 16-7. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) made three saves for the Corsairs, while DeSantis made seven for Becker.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 5-6 with the defeat, while Becker improved to 5-6 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State Saturday.
