FITCHBURG, MA – Fitchburg State scored the go-ahead goal with 4:40 remaining in the game and held on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team, 2-1, at a wet Lunenburg High School field Saturday afternoon.
Lisa Ferrantino broke away and slid a shot past Corsair junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) with4:40 remaining in the game to break a 1-all tie.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Langan (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) gave UMD a 1-0 lead 9:12 into the first half when she batted a shot past Falcon goalkeeper Christina Charron. Kristin Frazier tied the score five minutes later, converting a pass from Sarah Proctor to tie the score.
“It was similar to our last game (2-1 loss to Becker Thursday), said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jen Burrows. “We played well, but we couldn’t get our shots off.”
FSC out shot the Corsairs, 11-5. Fitzgerald made nine saves, while Charron made four.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 5-7, 2-4 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Falcons improved to 10-1 and 6-1 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State Monday afternoon.
