CORSAIR FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO PLYMOUTH STATE

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Plymouth State scored four goals in the second half and pulled away from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 6-1, in the Little East Conference field hockey opener for both teams at the UMass Dartmouth athletic complex Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Langan (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) scored with 14:50 remaining in the first half to cut a 2-0 PSU lead in half.

The Panthers struck quickly in the second half. Lilly Silva scored the first of her two goals just six minutes after the start of the second half, then scored again with 18:54 remaining to give Plymouth State a 4-1 advantage. Amanda Spadafora scored the Panthers’ last two goals, one with 10:57 remaining and the final goal with 3:29 to play.

Jenna Lace scored Plymouth State’s first two goals. Her first goal with 23:44 left in the first half gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead, and then she scored again four minutes and nine seconds later to make it 2-0, PSU. Lace also added a pair of assists for PSU, while Heidi Hand, Mel Dixon and Christina Farias had one apiece.

Goalkeeper Katie Randall had seven saves for the Panthers, while junior Jessica Tavares (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) had nine for the Corsairs.

Plymouth State is a good team,” said UMD Head Coach Jen Burrows. “We played hard, but we still need to work on a few things. Some of our seniors are starting to step up, but we still have to work on putting everything together.”

UMass Dartmouth fell to 1-1, 0-1 in conference play with the defeat, while PSU improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in LEC competition. The Corsairs will host Clark in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon.
