SALEM, MA -- The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth used a comeback to earn their first Little East Conference victory of the season Wednesday afternoon.
The Corsairs scored twice in the final 22 minutes and defeated Salem State, 2-1.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Langan (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) scored the winning goal for UMass Dartmouth, converting a perfect goalmouth pass from sophomore forward Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) with 9:27 remaining.
The Corsairs had tied the game on a goal by sophomore forward Lindsay Berube (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) with 21:25 remaining. Freshman midfielder Rebecca Stephens (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS), the reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, drew the assist.
SSU had drawn first blood after a scoreless first half. Stephanie Currier’s goal eight minutes into the second half gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
“We went back and forth in the first half, but we definitely played better in the second half,” said UMD Head Coach Jen Burrows. “I was pleased with the way we played. We had to step up, and it was our first league win, so it’s a big victory.”
The Corsairs out shot Salem State, 19-14. Junior Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) made nine saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Meaghan Oskirko had seven saves for the Vikings.
With the win, UMD improved to 4-4, 1-2 in Little East play. Salem State fell to 2-7 and 2-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Saturday afternoon.
