NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–Salve Regina scored three goals in a span of 17 minutes and 45 seconds in the first half and went on to a 3-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Seahawks got a goal from Carolyn Salvucci and two more from Cara Dunn to take a 3-0-halftime lead.
Salvucci converted a pass from Whitney Bushee with 22:13 left in the first half to give SRU a 1-0 lead. Dunn scored her first goal at the 18:08 mark of the first half and scored again four and a half minutes before intermission. Bushee assisted on the first goal, while Katelyn McGuire assisted on the second.
“We didn’t have our ‘A’ game today,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jen Burrows. “We picked it up in the second half, and (junior goaltender) Jessica (Tavares, Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) played well.”
Tavares took over for starting goalkeeper Liz Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) at halftime and made five saves. Fitzgerald made three as the Corsairs out shot Salve Regina, 22-17. Seahawk goalkeeper Brook Bowley made 11 saves in earning the shutout.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 8-10 with the defeat, while SRU improved to 8-5. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Little East Conference opponent Western Connecticut State Saturday afternoon.
