CORSAIRS DOWN SOUTHERN MAINE, 2-1 IN 2 OT

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA– Sophomore midfielder Amy McGillicuddy (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) will always remember her first goal in a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey uniform.

McGillicuddy’s goal less than a minute and a half into the second sudden-death overtime

period gave the Corsairs a 2-1 Little East Conference victory over Southern Maine at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

McGillicuddy scored on a shot from the top of the circle to end the match.

Senior midfielder Robin Dziedzic scored with 1:14 remaining in the first half to give UMD a 1-0 halftime lead. Dziedzic dove and drove home a pass from sophomore forward Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) with 1:14 left in the first half, allowing UMass Dartmouth to take a 1-0 halftime lead.

USM tied the score in the second half. Alyssa Kraus took a pass from Irene Coleman on a penalty corner and sent a shot past UMD junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) with 23:56 remaining.

The Corsairs were unsuccessful on two penalty strokes. Senior defender Caitlin Nottebart (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) had her shot stopped by Husky goalkeeper Natalie Nimon with 6:09 left in the first half, and Dziedzic missed with 9:08 left in regulation time.

“We missed a couple of open nets, and we had a few chances where the ball just rolled across in front of the goal and nobody touched it,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jen Burrows. “I was very happy with the victory. We played well, and we have to keep winning to make the Little East playoffs.”

The Corsairs out shot Southern Maine, 41-9. Fitzgerald made six saves, while Nimon was credited with 27.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-9, 4-5 in the Little East with the defeat, while USM fell to 5-10 and 4-4. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Westfield State Monday afternoon.
