                                          CORSAIRS DOWN WESTFIELD STATE, 2-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–With overtime looming on the horizon, sophomore midfielder Erin Langan (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team connected for the winning goal.

Langan converted a pass from sophomore forward Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) with four minutes and 20 seconds left to play, giving the Corsairs a 2-1 Little East Conference victory over Westfield State at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday afternoon.

Her goal broke a 1-all tie that existed for a little more than two minutes. It was created when Westfield State’s Carolyn Insigne took a pass from Megan Wolski and scored to tie the game.

DiCecca had put UMD ahead in the first half. She scored 9:08 before halftime to give the Corsairs a 1-0 lead.

“Our passing was on today, and we played well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jen Burrows. “After we fell behind, I had confidence that we would score again. We have been practicing that play where we pass across in front of the net and Erin came through.”

The Corsairs out shot the Owls,30-13. Junior goalkeeper Liz Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) made 10 saves, while WSC goalkeeper Cat Hanks was credited with 14.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-9, 5-5 in the Little East with the defeat, while Westfield State fell to 6-7 and 6-3. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salve Regina Wednesday afternoon.
