                                                       CORSAIRS DOWNED BY WHEATON, 4-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – Wheaton took advantage of their opportunities in their field hockey game against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on the turf at Cressy Field Thursday afternoon.

The Lyons scored twice in the first half, then added a pair of goals 1:16 apart midway through the second half en route to a 4-1 victory over the Corsairs.

Senior midfielder Robin Dziedzic (Palmer, MA/Palmer HS) scored the only goal for UMass Dartmouth. Her hard shot from 10 yards out sailed past WC goalkeeper Emily Fiskio at the 27:58 mark of the first half.

Wheaton drew first blood, taking a 1-0 lead when Lyndsie Ryalls batted a loose ball past Corsair junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) four minutes and 35 seconds into the match. Shea Clarke made it 2-0, taking Liz Rowland’s pass on a penalty corner and firing home a hard shot to make it 2-0 at the 22:50 mark.

The Lyons increased their lead in the second half. Rowland scored at the 50:34 mark. One minute and 16 seconds later, Ryalls drove through the defense and flicked a backhand shot into the net to make it 4-1.

“I thought both teams played well, and Wheaton did a better job of taking advantage of their chances,” said UMD Head Coach Jen Burrows. “We passed the ball well, but we just couldn’t finish. Wheaton is a good team with good skills. We broke down for a few minutes, and that’s all it takes.”

WC out shot UMass Dartmouth, 31-13. Fitzgerald made 18 saves, while Fiskio made six.

The Corsairs fell to 6-8 with the defeat, while Wheaton improved to 5-9. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they meet Westfield State Saturday in a Little East Conference match.
