NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – The first home match for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on the turf at Cressy Field was an artistic success Monday afternoon.
The Corsairs moved their Little East Conference match against Worcester State to Cressy Field because of wet grounds at their field at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
A first half goal by freshman forward Becky Stephens (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS) and a second half score by sophomore forward Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) accounted for all of the scoring as the Corsairs blanked the Lancers, 2-0.
Stephens scored with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. She tipped a pass by senior midfielder Robin Dziedzic (Palmer, MA/Palmer HS) past WSC goalkeeper Nichole Gomes to make it 1-0.
DiCecca’s goal, 4:22 into the second half, doubled UMD’s advantage. She put a short shot past Gomes. Sophomore midfielder Amy McGillicuddy (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) assisted.
“We were sharp today,” said UMD Head Coach Jen Burrows. “This was a big game for us, it was a Little East game, and we’re battling to get into the post-season tournament. We came out and stepped up our game today, and it paid off.”
The Lancers battled back, but UMass Dartmouth junior goalkeeper Liz Fitzgerald (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) made 12 saves, many of them from point-blank range, before junior Jessica Tavares (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) replaced her with 4:53 remaining and completed the shutout.
”Liz played very well, she kept us in the game,” said Burrows. “She made several good saves, and deserved the shutout.”
WSC out shot the Corsairs, 14-13. Fitzgerald made 12 saves and Tavares added one. Gomes made nine saves for the Lancers.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-7, 3-4 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while WSC fell to 4-8 and 2-5. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Wheaton Thursday afternoon.
