The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs opened the 2001 football season with a hard fought 22-13 victory against a good Springfield College Team. �The Corsair defense forced 8 fumbles and recovered 7 of them to hold the Pride to just 13 points. UMass Dartmouth�s Shane Harris (Marion, MA) rushed for 78 yards on 42 carries and scored one of UMass Dartmouth�s 2 touchdowns. Corsair place kicker Jacob Jata (Port Richey, FL) kicked �3 field goals which proved to be the difference in the contest, Jata�s field goals where from 35, 24 and 33 yards out. ��Both Springfield�s scores came on kickoff returns, the first by Luke Quiqley (Athol, MA) an 85 yd return on the opening kickoff of the game.� The story of this contest however was the UMass Dartmouth defense which held Springfield to just 181 net yards just 51 through the air.� Senior Defensive end Mark Kulakowski (Peabody, MA) had a strong contest for UMass Dartmouth recording 4 solo tackles and recovering two fumbles.� UMass Dartmouth will next travel to Plymouth State College on Saturday September 15 th for a 2:00 PM contest.
