UMass Dartmouth defeats Worcester State, 21-7 in Northeast
ECAC Championship Bowl Game
(Dartmouth, MA) – Shawn Theriault rushed for 217 yards on 43 carries and a touchdown to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 21-7 victory over Worcester State College in the 2003 Northeast ECAC Championship game Saturday at Cressy Field.
The career leading rusher at UMass Dartmouth, Theriault earned game Most Valuable Player honors after leading the Corsairs to their ninth victory of the season against two losses. Worcester State College finished with a record of 8-3.
UMass Dartmouth jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Derek Bealby intercepted a Cean Oksanish pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. Bealby added the first of three conversions for the 7-0 lead. A minute later, Worcester State tied the score on a 67-yard touchdown pass from Oksanish to Jeremy Gaucher. Tom Crossman added the conversion for a 7-7 tie.
The Corsairs scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown when John Falcone capped off a five-play, 37-yard drive with a nine-yard score. Bealby’s conversion with 1:44 to play in the half sent UMass Dartmouth to the locker room with a 14-7 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, Theriault put the game out of reach for UMass Dartmouth with a three-yard touchdown run. The Corsairs held the ball for eight plays and 66 yards, taking 3:42 off the clock to clinch their first post-season football championship.
Worcester State College turned the ball over nine times with five lost fumbles and four interceptions.
