Football 2003 Review

Won-Loss:   9-2 overall, 4-2 tied for 2nd in Boyd Division

Head coach: William Kavanaugh (87-51, 14th season)

Captains: John Falcone, Thomas Koska, Matthew O’Day

Leading scorers: Sean Theriault (13 TDs) 78 points  Derek Bealby (28-34 xp, 3-6 FG) 27 points

Post season awards: Koska NEFC First Team defensive back, Tom Mahoney NEFC First Team linebacker, Falcone at quarterback and Theriault at running back were NEFC Second Team selections. DB Jason Beroa and DE Phil Rashkovetsky along with TE Joe Andenmotten were NEFC Honorable Mention.

Post season highlights: Defeated Worcester State, 21-7, in Northeast ECAC Championship Bowl at Cressy Field for first post season victory by a UMD football team. Shawn Theriault was the game MVP after carrying 43 times for 217 yards to finish as the UMD career rushing leader. UMD defense produced nine Worcester State turnovers in the game.

Season highlights: UMD finished with the top ranked defense in the NEFC, allowing 224 yards per game, almost 30 years less per game than next team. Corsairs were first in run defense (87.9 yards per game) and second in pass efficiency defense. Allowing 9.5 points per game, UMD was first in scoring defense.  UMD extended its regular season winning streak to 14 straight dating to 2002 before falling to Curry College, 21-12, in the fourth regular season game of the season. Corsairs have won 12 straight home games over the last two seasons.
