CORSAIR FOOTBALL TEAM FALLS IN SHRINE BOWL, 48-7

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Bridgewater State scored on their first five possessions and went on to a 48-7 victory over the host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team in the annual Shrine Bowl at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.

The Bears used big plays on each of their scoring drives. Running back Brenden Kavey, who was stopped for a one-yard loss on BSC’s first play from scrimmage, rumbled 61 yards for a score on the next play to make it 7-0.

After a Corsair punt, BSC quarterback Adam Camobreco hit Ben Bascon 37 yard pass, setting up a first down at the UMass Dartmouth 13. Five plays later, Camobreco’s pass to Mark Hull made it 14-0.

Another big play set up the third Bear score. On 2nd and five at the Corsair 49, Camobreco connected with Bascon 33 yarda and a first down. Kavey carried on the final two plays of the drive, scoring from a yard out to make it 20-0, BSC with 34 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Adam Howe intercepted a pass by UMD freshman quarterback Alex Garro (Mattapoisett, MA/Mattapoisett HS) on the Corsairs’ next possession, giving the Bears a first down at the BSC 44. Camobreco hit Bascon for 53 yards on Bridgewater State’s first play from scrimmage, then scored two plays later on a three-yard keeper. A 62-yard pass from Camobreco to Jesse Teixeira set up Kavey’s one-yard run that made it 34-0 with 7:36 remaining in the first half.

“In order to play good defense, you have to stop big plays, and we didn’t do that,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bill Kavanaugh. “Our defense is very young, and we didn’t stop their big plays. They’re a good team, and you have to give them credit. They made the big plays on third down.”

UMD regrouped in the second half, holding Bridgewater State to 123 yards in total offense and 14 points and scoring their lone touchdown. For the second week in a row, freshman quarterback Kraig Mello (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) came off the bench to lead a scoring drive. Trailing, 48-0, the Corsairs got the ball at their own 38 yard line after an 18-yard kickoff return by freshman Mike Crusco (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS). UMD moved the ball 62 yards in 12 plays, all on the ground. Sophomore running back Rob Sullivan (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill HS), who accounted for 33 yards on the drive, scored from three yards out to put the Corsairs on the board with 8:40 remaining.

“We changed a few things up this week, and it takes time,” said Kavanagh. “It takes a while to make changes, and Bridgewater is a good team. We’ll have to play well the next two weeks, because the teams we’re playing are good teams. But we’ll be OK.”

Camobreco was named as BSC’s Most Valuable Player for the Shrine Game. Senior linebacker Mike Bleakley (Westminster, MA/Oakmont HS), who had four and a half tackles, including three solos and a sack, was named the Shrine MVP for UMass Dartmouth.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-3 with the defeat, while Bridgewater State improved to 2-0. The Corsairs will open their New England Football Conference Boyd Division schedule when they visit defending conference champion Curry next Saturday afternoon.
