CORSAIR FOOTBALL TEAM BOWS AT CURRY, 34-6

MILTON, MA-Curry scored twice with two minutes and two seconds late in the third quarter to break the game open and went on to a 34-6 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team in a New England Football Conference Boyd Division game at the Walter Katz Athletic Field Saturday afternoon.

Brandon Benoit ran 21 yards for a touchdown on the sixth play of a 31-yard scoring drive to give the Colonels a 27-6 lead with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter. Curry began the drive at the Corsair 31 yard line after Charles Gibbs returned senior Derek Bealby’s (Peterborough, NH/Con Val HS) punt 21 yards into UMD territory.

The Colonels scored again just over two minutes later. After the Corsairs were unable to move the ball, Gibbs struck again, returning Bealby’s punt 35 yards to the UMass Dartmouth 43 yard line. On the first play, running back Tim Jones threw an option pass to Jon Jones for a touchdown to make it 34-6.

Curry took the lead on their second series of the game. Gibbs intercepted a pass by Corsair freshman quarterback Alex Garro (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) and returned it to the Corsair 25. On third and one, Benoit scored from 16 yards out to give the Colonels a 7-0 lead.

UMass Dartmouth came back late in the first quarter. They began a drive on their 37-yard line and moved 63 yards in seven plays, all on the ground. Junior running back Jameson Humphries (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow HS), who accounted for 48 yards on the drive, scored from 10 yards out. Bealby’s extra point was blocked.

Curry answered on their next drive. They moved 84 yards in 12 plays. Quarterback Kevin Holleran hit Jon Jones with a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-6.

UMD threatened later in the second quarter. Freshman Mike Crusco (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) returned a punt 16 yards to the Curry 44 yard line. The Corsairs drove to the CC 14 yard line with 1:29 remaining in the first half, but Bealby’s 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide to the right.

Curry took the ball at their own 20-yard line and failed to move. On fourth down, Jon Jones took off from punt formation, running 81 yards for a touchdown with eight seconds remaining. A two-point conversion try failed, and it was 20-6, Curry, at halftime.

The Colonels rolled up 382 yards of total offense to UMass Dartmouth’s 214, and Gibbs added 75 yards on five punt returns. Humphries led the Corsairs with 109 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown.

UMD dropped to 0-4, 0-1 in the NEFC Boyd Division, while Curry improved to 202 and 1-0. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Endicott next Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field. Game time is 12 noon, and it will be Homecoming.
