Merrimack shuts out UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in season-opener, 35-0
(Dartmouth, MA) – David Leach scored two touchdowns and Merrimack College rolled up 360 yards in total offense to post a 35-0 shutout victory over UMass Dartmouth at Cressy Field on Saturday. The victory was Merrimack College’s first on the 2005 season, while the Corsairs fall to 0-1.
The Division II Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage when Colin Temple (18-35-0-191) hit Elren Quiles with a 54-yard TD pass. Ryan Kelly added the first of five extra points for the early lead. Leach (14 carries, 62 yards) scored his first of two rushing TDs with a 10-yard score with 17 seconds to play in the first quarter for a 14-0 Merrimack lead. Leach added a 6-yard TD with 2:56 left before halftime to give the Warriors a 21-0 lead.
Merrimack’s Mike Hinkley made it 28-0 on a 3-yard scoring run late in the third quarter before Paul Pisani hit Sean McFee for a 25-yard TD pass late in the final quarter for the 35-0 final.
UMass Dartmouth was held to 114 yards of total offense, including 36 carries for 28 yards rushing. In his first start at quarterback for UMass Dartmouth, Sean Sullivan connected on 13 of 29 passes for 86 yards and one interception. Manny Lopes was the Corsairs’ leading receiver with 7 catches for 23 yards.
UMass Dartmouth will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Plymouth State University in a 1:00 pm start.
