UMASS DARTMOUTH DEFEATS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND, 17-3

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-For the second consecutive week, a rainy Cressy Field was the site of a victory by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team.

The Corsairs scored early, took a 14-3 halftime lead and went on to a 17-3 victory over Western New England in a New England Football Conference Boyd Division game on Senior Day.

UMass Dartmouth gave the Golden Bears a different look, putting senior slot back Manny Lopes (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) in the backfield and handing him the ball on the first three plays. After Lopes gained 12 yards and a first down, freshman quarterback Alex Garro (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) took over. Garro completed consecutive passes to freshman wide receiver Mike Crusco (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS)  for 25 yards, then hit sophomore tight end Charley Gryska (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) one play later for 23 yards and a touchdown to make it 7-0.

“We ran that for about five plays against Nichols,” said UMD Head Coach Bill Kavanaugh. “We did it again this week because our primary game plan was to pound the ball inside and set up some other things we wanted to do.”

WNEC scored in the second quarter. Starting at their 20-yard line after Brett Hansen intercepted a Garro pass, the Golden Bears drove 71 yards in 16 plays. With a first and goal at the nine, the Corsairs stopped a pair of running plays for no gain, and WNEC quarterback Pat Murphy’s third down pass was incomplete. James Farrell connected on a 25-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

A sequence that began with a 50-yard punt by UMD senior Derek Bealby (Peterborough, NH/Con Val HS) resulted in UMass Dartmouth’s second score in the second quarter. Bealby’s punt pinned the Golden Bears at their 11-yard line. Two plays later, Murphy’s pass was intercepted by senior defensive back Sean Sullivan (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS) and returned to the WNEC nine. Three running plays moved the ball to the one, and, on fourth down, Corsair junior running back Jameson Humphries (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow HS) was stopped by Hansen and Daniel Merriam for a two-yard loss.

UMD’s defense held, and on fourth down, punter Josh Kirson had to field a high snap and was tackled at WNEC’s one-yard line. On the next play, sophomore running back Rob Sullivan (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill HS) scored to make it 14-3.

Bealby added the final three points of the game in th4e fourth quarter. After a Kirson punt, the Corsairs drove from their 40 to the Western New England 10. Three plays netted three yards, and Bealby’s 25 yard field goal made it 17-3.

“I was pleased that we won,” said Kavanaugh. “We executed well, although we got bogged down with some penalties and mental mistakes. This was a big game for our seniors. We really wanted to win our last home game. We have a chance to win five games and go 5-5, which would be very good.”

Lopes rushed 15 times for 91 yards for UMD, while Humphries picked up 59 yards in 15 carries. Garro was 15 of 24 for 165 yards, while Gryska caught five passes for 83 yards. In addition to converting a field goal and two extra points, Bealby punted five times for a 34.6 yard average, dropping three kicks inside the WNEC 20-yard line and making 2 ½ tackles on defense, including two solos.

Jordan Capitanio rushed 25 times for 114 yards for the Golden Bears. Murphy was 16 of 36 for 116 yards, but had three passes intercepted.

The Corsairs improved to 3-5, 3-2 in NEFC Boyd Division play with the win, while WNEC dropped to 2-5 and 1-3. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Massachusetts Maritime Academy next Saturday at 12 noon.
