Eight former athletes and one team, representing three of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's predecessor institutions, will be inducted into the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Hall of Fame as its Class of 1995.

The annual Corsair Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and dinner are part of the 1995 Homecoming Weekend and will be held Friday, October 13 in the Resident's Dining Room, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available by contacting the UMass Dartmouth Alumni Affairs Office at (508) 999-8031.

The Class of 1995 includes the late Russell Booth (Durfee Tech '49, basketball and soccer), William Butler (New Bedford Tech '63, soccer), John Frye (Southeastern Massachusetts University '71, friend), Steve P. Charest (SMU '79, tennis), Steven Murphy (SMU '83, fencing), Stephan Baptista (SMU '87, track and field), Cathy Dors (SMU '88, track and field) and Timothy Dupree (SMU '89, basketball).

In the team category, the 1984-85 ice hockey team coached by John Rolli will be inducted. Among the inductees are Rolli, assistant coaches Ken Whiten, Mike Relihan, manager Reggie Hickney, trainer Anthony Garcia and assistant trainer Lori Brooks Brown. Team members include (all SMU graduates) Peter Barbagallo '85, Paul Copponi '87, Scott Cordeiro '86, Marc Dubois '88, Rob Eichelroth '88, Arthur Georgantas '86, Scott Glennon '86, Dan Hart '91, Dan Higgins '88, Jeffrey Janvrin '88, Curt Larson '85, Rick Lavache '86, Steve MacDonald '87, Glenn Maxwell '88, Bob McPhee '87, Steve Melloni '89, Paul Moore '85, Pat Morrison '87, Jay Mulligan '88, Ed Pomphrett '85, Craig Shea '88, Robert Silvia '86, Richard Stagg '91, Peter Sullivan '88, Rob Taylor '85 and Gary Warren '88.

Russell Booth

To be honored posthumously, Booth played basketball and soccer for Durfee Tech and becomes that school's third inductee into the Corsair Hall of Fame. Booth dominated the basketball scene when he played for Durfee Tech in the late 40's and was also an outstanding soccer player. Booth was Durfee Tech's captain in 1948, leading his team to the Southern New England Conference championship. He set a school record as a junior, averaging 23.6 points per game. Booth passed away in 1992.

William Butler

Butler becomes the fifth New Bedford Textile graduate to join the Corsair Hall of Fame. In his four years with the soccer team, NBIT captured four consecutive league championships and Butler played a key role on each team. As a senior, Butler scored 26 goals for a four-year record of 83 goals, twice scoring five goals in a game.

John Frye

Over the last 27 years, the UMass Dartmouth athletic department has not had a better friend than Frye. His association with the Corsairs began as an SMU student and continues today as the official scorer for the UMass Dartmouth men's basketball and the athletic department's historian. He has volunteered his services to the department throughout the years and is currently compiling a history of the sports programs at UMass Dartmouth and its predecessor institutions.

Steven P. Charest

Charest was an outstanding tennis player at SMU for four seasons from 1976-79. As a freshman, he compiled a 10-1 singles record and a 3-2 mark in doubles. In his senior year, he was 9-1 in singles and 5-4 in doubles. During his four years with the SMU tennis program, the Corsairs were 23-16-1. Charest is well known in area tennis circles as one of the top men's players and teachers of the sport. Charest remains active as a teacher, player and coach with the Dartmouth High School girl's tennis team.

Steven Murphy

Murphy was the most outstanding fencer in school history, earning four varsity letters during his career. As a junior, he was the Corsairs' team captain with a 20-4 record, finishing third in the New England Championship. As team captain during his senior year, he was 19-2 and led SMU to a third-place finish in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championship. Competing against fencers from all three NCAA division, he finished 19th in the NCAA National Fencing Championships (foil) in 1983. During his four-year fencing career at SMU, Murphy won 63 matches.

Stephan Baptista

At the 1987 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship, Baptista was the national champion in the hammer throw. A two-time Division III All America selection, he qualified for four national championship meets, twice captured the New England Division III hammer throw championship and graduated with school records in the hammer throw (190' 3") and 35-pound weight (53' 1").

Cathy Dors

In her three seasons throwing the javelin for SMU, Dors was among the best in the country. She was an NCAA All America selection in 1985, placing 6th at the NCAAs after a 4th place in the All New Englands and finished first at the ECAC Division III championship. One year later, she was again an NCAA All America, placing third at the NCAAs to go along with an All New England title. As a senior, she had the longest throw in Division III in the country during the season, but suffered a shoulder injury late in the season. She placed 9th at the NCAAs in 1987.

Timothy Dupree

Three of Duprees' four SMU men's basketball teams qualified for NCAA Division III tournaments. As a junior, he was Little East Conference Tournament MVP and LEC All Star, along with First Team Northeast Regional and Second Team UPI All New England honors. Dupree averaged 17 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game in his career. He is seventh in career scoring at UMass Dartmouth (1,807 points), and second in career rebounds (966) and field goal percentage (.607). In his four seasons with the Corsairs, his teams had an 86-23 record, including a school record 27-1 in 1986-87.

1984-85 Ice Hockey Team

Coach John Rolli's 1984-85 ice hockey team captured an unprecedented third consecutive ECAC title with a team-record 20-3 record and started a 38-game unbeaten streak that still stands as an ECAC record for all divisions. SMU's tournament victories included a 4-1 win over Fitchburg State, a 5-4 overtime win against Iona before defeating Trinity College 3-2 for the ECAC championship. The team's most valuable player was Bobby Silvia and the Seventh Player Award went to Steve MacDonald. Captain Scott Glennon received the Corsairs' Award that year. Peter Barbagallo and Paul Moore represented SMU on the 1984-85 ECAC All Star Team. Selected as ECAC Players of the Week during the 84-85 season were Ed Pomphrett, Curt Larson and Silvia.
