UMass Dartmouth returns to Hetland Arena for first
round of ECAC Northeast Tournament vs. Salve Regina
(Dartmouth, MA) - When the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs open the 2004-05 ECAC Northeast
hockey tournament at Hetland Arena on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 pm against Salve Regina
University, the Corsairs will be attempting to win their first post season game on home ice in
four years.
Coach John Rolli's Corsairs enter this year's ECAC Northeast Tournament as the second
seeded team, riding a 13-game winning streak and sporting a 20-4 overall record. UMass
Dartmouth's 14-1 ECAC Northeast record left the Corsairs with 28 points, trailing only
top-seeded defending ECAC Northeast champion Curry College (14-0-1, 29 pts ECAC NE).
As the tournament's second seed, the Corsairs would be in position to host an ECAC NE
semi-final round game if they are able to get past Salve Regina in the first round Saturday.
In other first round ECAC Northeast Tournament action on Saturday, Feb. 26, #1 Curry
College (16-5-3 overall) will host #8 Framingham State (6-14-2, 5-10 ECAC NE).
#6 Johnson and Wales (9-14-2, 8-7 ECAC NE) will travel to #3 Wentworth Institute
(14-9-2, 11-2-2 ECAC E), while #5 Fitchburg State (12-11-1, 8-6-1 ECAC NE) will play
at #4 Plymouth State University (12-9-2, 9-5-1 ECAC NE).
The four ECAC NE first round winners advance to the semi-final round on Wednesday,
March 2. Both semi-final round games are hosted by the two highest remaining seeded
teams in the tournament. The ECAC Northeast Championship game is played at the
highest seeded team left in the field on Saturday, March 5. The ECAC Northeast champion
earns an automatic berth in to the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.
In Salve Regina University, the Corsairs will be facing the Seahawks for a third time during the
2004-05 season and attempting to earn a third victory. Back on Nov. 10, the Corsairs knocked
off Salve Regina in a non-conference game by an 8-4 final score. In the ECAC Northeast
conference game played at Portsmouth Abbey on Feb. 2, Salve Regina jumped out to a 3-1

off Salve Regina in a non-conference game by an 8-4 final score. In the ECAC Northeast
conference game played at Portsmouth Abbey on Feb. 2, Salve Regina jumped out to a 3-1
lead early in the second period before the Corsairs came back for a 6-3 victory, scoring five
unanswered goals in the final two periods.
During the current 13-game winning streak, the Corsairs have been led by a trio of players,
junior Eric Frank (Waltham, MA) and senior Scott Trahan (Chelmsford, MA) and senior goalie
Kevin McGowan (Hingham, MA). Frank leads all NCAA II/III players in scoring with 23 goals
and 30 assists for 53 points in 20 games. Trahan, who had been leading the nation in scoring
before a midseason injury kept him out of the lineup for three weeks, is second on the team
with 17 goals and 16 assists for 33 points in 18 games. In goal, McGowan is 18-4-0 with a
.906 saves percentage and a 2.54 goals against average. In last Wednesday's 6-0 win over
Nichols, McGowan, a two-time ECAC NE goalie of the week, not only recorded his first
shutout of the season, but also assisted on a Corsair score to earn his 50th career win.
The return to home ice at Hetland Arena is important to the Corsairs, who posted a 7-3 overall
record at home this season. But in the post season the Corsairs have not had a tournament
victory at Hetland since a 5-4 win over Lebanon Valley College on Feb. 26, 2000. The last post
season game played at Hetland was two years ago when Salve Regina University knocked off
the Corsairs, 4-3, in an ECAC first round game on Feb. 23, 2002.
