#2 UMass Dartmouth to host #3 Wentworth Institute
in ECAC Northeast semi-final game at Hetland, Mar. 2
(Dartmouth, MA) - With a berth in the ECAC Northeast championship game at stake, the
UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (21-4) and Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards (15-9-2) will
face off in one of two ECAC NE semi-final round games on Wednesday night, March 2. Game
time at Hetland Arena in New Bedford is 7:30 pm.
In the other semi-final round game on Wednesday, top-seeded Curry College (17-5-3) will host
#4 Plymouth State University (13-9-2) at 7:30 pm. The semi-final round winners will meet on
Saturday, March 5 in the ECAC NE championship game to be hosted by the highest seeded
of the two remaining teams. The ECAC NE champion earns an automatic qualification into the
NCAA Division III Championship ice hockey tournament which gets underway next week.
UMass Dartmouth advanced to the ECAC NE semi-finals with a solid 4-1 first round victory over
Salve Regina University last Saturday. Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA) scored a pair of goals for
UMass Dartmouth to help extend the Corsairs' winning streak to 14 straight games. Goalie Kevin
McGowan (Hingham, MA) improved his won-loss record to 20-4 this season by allowing only one
Seahawk goal and making 30 saves. The victory was UMass Dartmouth's first home playoff win at
Hetland Arena in four years.
During the Corsairs' 14-game winning streak, UMass Dartmouth been led by a trio of players,
junior Eric Frank (Waltham, MA), senior Scott Trahan (Chelmsford, MA) and McGowan. Frank leads
all NCAA II/III players in scoring with 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points in 21 games. Trahan, who
had been leading the nation in scoring before a midseason injury kept him out of the lineup for three
weeks, is second on the team with 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points in 19 games. A two-time
ECAC NE goalie of the week, McGowan is ranked 6th nationally in winning percentage of .838.
In addition to the Corsairs' nationally-ranked scorers, UMass Dartmouth has been successful on offense
with five scorers in double figures for goal scoring. In addition to Frank and Trahan, the Corsairs'
well-rounded offense has been led by Shane Relihan (New Bedford, MA) (14-20-34), McCullough (12-21-33)
and Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ) (13-14-27). UMass Dartmouth averages 6.04 goals per game, while allowing
opponents to 2.48 goals per game.
UMass Dartmouth earned the semi-final round home game at Hetland Arena by finishing second in the
ECAC NE helped in large part by a 5-3 victory at Wentworth Institute on Feb. 9. Jim Foley (Brockton, MA)
and McCullough led the Corsairs with a goal and assist each while McGowan came up with 27 saves
on the night. The Leopards had a 3-0 lead early in the second period before goals by Trahan and
McCullough narrowed the lead. Frank tied the game on a power-play early in the third period and Foley's
goal at 7:57 proved to be the game-winner.
Wentworth finished at 15-9-2 overall and 11-2-2 in the ECAC NE for third place. In addition to their 5-3
regular season loss to the Corsairs, the Leopards only other loss was a 3-2 decision to Johnson and Wales
on Feb. 20. Wentworth was the only team to blemish top-seeded Curry College's record, settling for a 4-4
overtime tie with the Colonels on Jan. 22.
The Leopards moved into the semi-finals following a 6-2 first round victory over #6 Johnson and Wales University
last Saturday. Holding a 1-0 lead after one period, Wentworth broke the game open with four second-period
goals, including a pair of short- handed scores. Matt Koehler led Wentworth with a pair of goals, while
Bill Clifford had a goal and two assists and Vince Guiducci had three assists. In goal for the Leopards,
Bryce McFadden came up with 32 saves for the victory.
Brad Carpenter is the Leopards' top scorer with 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points. Among the Leopards'
other top scores are Jayden Der (8-16-24), Mark Cavanaugh (10-12-22), Shawn Metheral (8-14-22) and
Clifford (11-9-22). McFadden has handled most of the goaltending duties, posting a 9-6-2 record with a
3.39 goals against average and a .898 saves percentage. He started 16 games this season and has
one shutout. Alan Keeso has started nine games with a 6-3 record and a 2.89 goals against average
with a .900 saves percentage.
