UMass Dartmouth Ice Hockey Preview 2004-2005
(Dartmouth, MA) The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs will look to
challenge in the ECAC Northeast for an unprecedented ninth championship with a
veteran lineup including 10 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 2 goaltenders. UMD will be
led by co-captains senior Brandon Koziara (Springfield, MA) and Ian Seaver (Ludlow,
MA), former high school teammates at Springfield Cathedral, and assistant
captain Scott Trahan (Chelmsford, MA/Tyngsboro Huskies).
The Corsairs featured a very balanced scoring attack last season and will once
again be led offensively by Eric Frank (Waltham, MA/ Tilton Academy). Last
season, Frank led all UMD scorers with 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points.
Frank, a junior center iceman, was selected to both the ECAC Northeast and New
England Hockey Writers All-Star teams. UMD will also count on Trahan, a senior,
(10-18-28), juniors Seaver (9-14-23) and Mike McPherson (Chelsea, MA/ Brewster
Academy 13-12-25), as well as sophomores Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/ Boston
Jr. Blackhawks 11-15-26), Jim Foley (Taunton, MA/ Catholic Memorial 10-8-18),
and Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/ Christian Brothers Academy 6-7-13). Three
transfers expected to crack the forward lineup are juniors Shane Relihan (New
Bedford, MA/ Bridgewater Bandits/ Mercyhurst College) and Joe Walsh (Pembroke,
MA/ Tilton Academy/ New England College), and sophomore Chris Grunther
(Medford, NJ/ Northwood School/ Southern Maine). Three freshmen challenging
for playing time include Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep), Paul Garabedian
(Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) and Ryan Grant (Braintree, MA/ Brewster Academy).
Five veterans and two freshmen will battle for positions along the blue line
including Koziara (1-11-12), juniors DJ Aucoin (Waltham, MA/ Waltham HS
2-17-19), David Cioch (Springfield, MA/ New England Jr. Coyotes), and Mike
Larkin (Braintree, MA/ Braintree HS), Sophomore Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/
New England JR. Coyotes 5-15-20), and Freshmen Jonathan Finn (Warwick, RI/
Boston Harborwolves) and Brian Chapin (Medway, MA/ Medway HS).
In goal senior Kevin McGowan (Hingham, MA/ Trinity-Pawling Prep) will get the
call. McGowan enters his fourth season with a 34-9-1 record (.784), a 2.94
goals against average, and 2 shutouts. Fellow senior Marc Barron (Marshfield,
MA/ Boston Harborwolves) will back up McGowan.
UMD, which lost in the ECAC Northeast semifinal game last season, will seek to
challenge league powers Curry and Wentworth in 2004-05. Key non-conference
opponents include NESCAC Connecticut College and Tufts, Southern Maine and
UMass Boston from the ECAC East, and Lebanon Valley from the ECAC West.
