UMASS DARTMOUTH DEFEATS SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 5-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA– Junior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Junior Blackhawks) scored four goals, and sophomore forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) added three assists and freshman goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) stopped 27 of 28 shots as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team won their ninth game in a row, defeating visiting Southern New Hampshire, 5-1, at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

 

McCullough scored the most important goal of the game after UMD senior forward Mike McPherson (Chelsea, MA/Brewster Academy) drew a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind at 8:25 of the second period, giving the Penmen a man advantage for five minutes. After the Corsairs cleared the puck into the SNHU zone, Grant intercepted a clearing pass and fed McCullough in the slot. He deked Penmen goalie Tim Fewster and slid the puck along the ice into the net to make it 3-0 at 11:21 of the second period.

 

McCullough had opened the scoring at 18:02 of the first period when he converted a pass from junior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) at the end of a two-on-one rush. Senior defenseman D.J. Aucoin (Marlboro, MA/Waltham HS) also assisted on the play.

 

The Corsairs made it 2-0 just 10 seconds before the first period ended. McPherson (Chelsea, MA/Brewster Academy) tipped a goalmouth pass from senior forward P.J. Lovett past Fewster. Senior forward Ian Seaver (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) also drew an assist.

 

A pair of power play goals by McCullough in the latter part of the second period made it 5-0, UMD, after two periods. He tipped in a goalmouth pass by Grant at 14:32 of the second period, just 30 seconds after Andrew Goduco of Southern New Hampshire went to the penalty box for hooking. Sophomore Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) also assisted.

 

McCullough’s fourth goal of the game, a power play goal at 18:38 of the second period, was a carbon copy of his third. Grant and Crock assisted on the goal that came just seven seconds into a Corsair power play.

 

Chet Riley of SNHU ruined Dryjowicz-Burek’s bid for s shutout, firing a slap shot through a screen at 14:30 of the third period. Kyle Bousquet and Joshua Douglas assisted.

 

“The shorthanded goal led to our two power play goals, and they came at the key point of the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “Kyle is a good goal scorer, and he and Jeff Grant really had something going today. Jon made some good saves for us, and we kept our winning streak going.”

 

UMD improved to 13-4-0 and 5-1-0 in the ECAC Northeast Conference with the victory, winning their ninth game in a row and10th in their last 11 games. Southern New Hampshire fell to 7-7-3 and 5-4-2 in ECAC Northeast play. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Suffolk Wednesday evening.
