UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS WORCESTER STATE, 10-3

NEW BEDFORD, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth scored twice within 42 seconds late in the first period to break a 1-all tie and went on to a  10-3  victory over Worcester State in an ECAC Northeast hockey game at the Hetland Ice Arena Tuesday evening.

Junior forward Ray Kirby (Fairhaven, MA/Salem State) and freshman forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) scored 42 seconds apart to give the Corsairs a lead they would never relinquish.

Kirby converted passes from senior forwards Ian Seaver (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) and P.J. Lovett (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) to give UMD a 2-1 lead just 37 seconds after WSC’s Nathan Perreault had tied the score on a breakaway. Shore took a pass from sophomore defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and made it 3-1 at the 16:23 mark.

Three unanswered goals in the second period made it 6-1. The Corsairs outscored the Lancers in the third period, 4-2, to account for the final margin.

Kirby finished with a three-goal hat trick to lead UMass Dartmouth. Lindner had a goal and two assists, while sophomore forward Jeff Grant scored two goals and added an assist.

“We changed up everything, all the forward lines and all the defensive pairings, and it made a difference,” said UMD Head Coach John Rolli. “It was nice to score some goals, and it was a good way to into the Thanksgiving break.”

The Corsairs out shot the Lancers, 47-22. WSC goalie Brian Robinson made 37 saves. UMass Dartmouth freshman goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) made 11 saves in the first two periods before giving way to sophomore Bruce Maggio (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS), who made eight saves in the third period. .

UMD improved to 3-2, 2-1 in ECAC Northeast Conference play, while WSC fell to 1-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the ECAC Northeast. The Corsairs will return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday when they visit Fitchburg State next Wednesday evening, November 30th..
