2004-05 season review story: Chris Lapriore named Little East Conference All-Star for second straight season at UMD (Dartmouth, MA) - UMass Dartmouth's men's basketball team posted its third consecutive 13-14 season in 2004-05 but it wasn't because of a lack of effort on the part of junior forward Chris Lapriore (Grafton, MA/Holy Name). For a second consecutive season, the Corsairs' top player was recognized for his efforts by the Little East Conference. Lapriore was named an All-LEC First Team selection following the 2004-05 season after leading UMass Dartmouth in both scoring (18.3 points/game, 4th in the LEC) and rebounding (7.2 rebounds/game, 6th in the LEC) and for ranking among the conference leaders in several other categories. Lapriore was also among the LEC leaders in offensive rebounds, ranking sixth in (2.62 per game), while placing fourth in defensive rebounding (4.73 per game). He shot a team-high .507% from the floor (193-380, 8th in the LEC) and had team highs in offensive rebounds (64) as well as defensive rebounds (187). He also led the Corsairs in minutes played (739), field goals (186), shots (367), free throws made and attempted (101-159, .635) and points (476). Lapriore added 34 assists, 15 blocked shots and 29 steals. As a sophomore two seasons ago, Lapriore was an LEC First Team selection last season, averaging 20.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game for the Corsairs. Lapriore also got plenty of help up front from senior Joey Britto (New Bedford, MA/NB Voke). The Corsairs' second leading scorer with 14.9 points per game (11th in the LEC), Britto averaged 5.9 rebounds per game and finished the season 7th in LEC free throw percentage, making 75 of 99 from the charity strip (.758). Britto also had a hot hand from beyond the three-point line, connecting on 32 of 95 (.337) to lead the Corsairs, while also adding a team-high 36 steals, an average of 1.35 per game, second most in the LEC. The season's highlight for UMass Dartmouth came with a late run at the end of the regular season. After falling to 9-13 overall in mid-February, UMass Dartmouth ran off three wins in a row to finish fifth in the LEC regular season standings. The fifth-seeded Corsairs extended the win streak to four in a row with an upset at fourth-seeded Keene State College in the First Round of the LEC Tournament, 89-82. In the LEC Tournament semi-finals at Western Connecticut, the Corsairs gave the eventual champions a great battle, before falling, 94-89. Among the other top players for the Corsairs during the 2004-05 season were sophomores Billy Cardoza (West Wareham, MA/Wareham) and Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, MA). Cardoza finished the season 10th in the LEC in three-pointers made, connecting on 30 of 77 (.417) while dishing out a team-high 62 assists. Pawlowski was a force on the defensive end, blocking 23 shots in 27 games (.85 per game) to finish 9th among the LEC leaders. Pawlowski averaged 7.9 points per game and 3.6 rebounds. Several newcomers to the program also made contributions to the Corsairs during the season. Freshman A. J. Tavares (New Bedford, MA) averaged 5.1 points per game, making 23 of 69 (.333) from beyond the three-point line. Freshman Tishon Crawley (Bridgeport, CT/Kolbe Cathedral) chipped in with 6.6 points per game and 1.9 rebounds coming off the bench, while junior Charlie Large (Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) had 4.9 points and 3.3. rebounds per game in some significant playing time. Senior Josh Adamec (Norwich, CT/Dean College) had 2.8 points, 1.8 rebounds plus 58 assists, to rank second on the team behind Cardoza. Senior Matt McAuliffe (Sutton, MA) averaged 4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, along with 46 assists, third best on the team. -- Jim Mullins Administrative Assistant for Promotion/Public Information UMass Dartmouth Athletic Department Tripp Athletic Center 285 Old Westport Road Dartmouth, MA 02747-2300 Phone: (508) 910-6930 Fax: (508) 999-8867 Email: JMullins@umassd.edu
