UMASS DARTMOUTH HOLDS OFF JOHNSON & WALES, 68-62

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–Junior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS/Westfield State) made a pair of jump shots and junior guard Devon Maiorano (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) hit a pair of crucial free throws in the waning moments as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team held off Johnson & Wales, 68-62,  at the Tripp Athletic Center Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats had rallied from a 47-29 deficit to trail, 62-55, with 2:23 remaining. Holbrook hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to give the Corsairs a nine-point advantage. After two baskets by Brian Fernandes and a free throw by Japhet Kerr made it 64-60, Maiorano drew a foul from Justin Adams and made two free throws to increase the Corsairs’ lead to six points with 33 seconds left. Fernandes hit another shot to make it 66-62, but Holbrook took a long pass from junior forward Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and laid it in to restore UMD’s six-point lead. Maiorano then stole a pass and the Corsairs ran off all but the last few seconds en route to the win.

”We came out of the gate pretty well, but then we got tired, and we let them back in the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “We ran out of energy. This is something that always seems to happen right before finals, right at the end of the first semester. I’m glad we were able to get it back together and hang on and win.”

Holbrook led all scorers with 22 points, Pawlowski and Maiorano each had 13, and junior forward Stephane Abelard (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS/Massasoit CC) had 10.

Conor Moran led the Wildcats with 16 points, Fernandes added 15 and Justin Adams contributed 12.

JWU IS 2-4 UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-4 with the victory, while JWU fell to 2-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will take time off for the holidays, returning to action January 3rd in the first game of the Salem Bank and Trust Classic against host Roanoke College.
