          UMASS DARTMOUTH FALLS AT TUFTS, 91-74

MEDFORD, MA–Tufts came from behind to take a 50-43 halftime lead and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team, 91-74, at Chase Gymnasium Thursday night.

The Jumbos overcame an early 10-point deficit and made 50 per cent of their shots from the field in the first half to take a 50-43 halftime lead.

The Corsairs cut it to 58-54 with 16:48 to play, but Tufts went on a 17-2 run during the next five minutes and nine seconds to take a 73-56 lead.

“We didn’t shoot well at all,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “They shot the ball pretty well. We came back in the second half and cut it to four points, but we couldn’t get any closer and they pulled away again.”

Junior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS/Westfield State) led the Corsairs with 22 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Devon Maiorano (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) had 13 points, junior forwards Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and Stephane Abelard (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) added 12 points and six rebounds each, while senior center Charlie Large (Easton, MA/Oliver Ames HS) has 11 points and six rebounds.

Abelard had 15, Maiorano and sophomore guard A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 14 points each, and freshman guard Reece Freeman (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge HS) added 10.

Jake Weitzen of the Jumbos had 21 points, David Shepherd added 16, and Jeremy Black and Ryan O’Keeffe added 13 apiece.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 2-3 with the defeat, while Tufts improved to 4-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Southern Maine Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader. It will be their Little East Conference opener
