CORSAIRS 19TH, 22ND AT CONNECTICUT COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

 

WATERFORD, CT-The men finished 19th of 24 teams and the women were 20th in a 22-team field as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth opened its cross country season at the Connecticut College Invitational Saturday afternoon.


The Corsair men finished with 537 points, while the women had 544. The College of New Jersey won both races. Matt Randall of the College of New Jersey won the men’s race in 25:05, while Kristina Miner of Trinity won the women’s race in 18:24.

 

Junior Brian Vatcher (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) led the Corsair men, finishing 91st in 27:03. Junior Dave Brooks (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) was 100th in 27:22, senior Casey Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug HS) 137th in 27:54, sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) 168th in 28:27, sophomore Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) 190th in 28:51, junior Mike Doyle (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS) 219th in 29:20, senior Mike LeBlanc (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) 228th in 29:28, sophomore Brendan Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug HS) 250th in 30:27, sophomore Matt Gagnon (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Valley HS) 282nd in 31:19, and freshman Greg Morrell (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) 283rd in 31:24.                                           

 

Sophomore Caitlin Schutz (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) led the women, finishing 112th in 21:08. Sophomore Stacey Sarber (Oakdale, CT/Montville HS) was 145th in 21;52, sophomore Libby DeBoalt (Middletown, MA/Masconomet HS) was 152nd in 22:04, freshman Katie Lynch (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was 172nd in 22:21, freshman Liz Pettigrew (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) 194th in 22:57, and junior Haley Lawson (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) 198th in 23:05.


”Both our men and women improved significantly from their performances in this race last year,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hind. “The race itself was much tougher, and the fields were much stronger. Brian Vatcher, our top runner, ran 1:34 faster than he did last year, Casey Cavanaugh, our third men’s runner, was 1:28 faster than he was last year, and Caitlin Schutz, our top women’s runner, ran 48 seconds better than she did last year.”

 

The Corsairs will return home to host the UMass Dartmouth Invitational next weekend.
