CORSAIRS 4TH, 11TH AT HARRIER CLASSIC
BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men finished fourth out of nine teams and the women were 11th in an 11-team field at the Harrier Classic at Franklin Park Saturday afternoon.
The Corsair men scored 135 points in the five-mile race. The Boston Athletic Association and the Greater Boston Track Club took the first two sports with 25 and 53 points, respectively. The United States Merchant Marine Academy was the top collegiate team, finishing third with 88 points.
The GBTC also finished first in the women’s competition with 59 points, just ahead of Memphis, which was second with 62. UMass Dartmouth finished with 306 points. The race was five kilometers long.
Junior Dave Brooks (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) led the Corsair men, finishing 17th in 26:58. Junior Brian Vatcher (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was 21st in 27:30, senior Casey Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug HS) 28th in 27:52, sophomore Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) 40th in 28:21, sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) 53rd in 28:51, senior Mike LeBlanc (Fall River, MA) 58th in 29:19, junior Michael Doyle (Quincy, MA) 62nd in 29:37, sophomore Matt Gagnon (Tewksbury, MA) 75th in 30:34, and freshman Greg Morrell (Rehoboth, MA) 90th in 32:21.
Sophomore Stacey Sarber (Oakdale, CT/Montville HS) led the women, finishing 53rd in 21:05. Sophomore Caitlin Schutz (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) was 62nd in 21:24, freshman Katie Lynch (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was 78th in 22:21, sophomore Libby DeBoalt (Middletown, MA/Masconomet HS) was 79th in 22:23, freshman Liz Pettigrew (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) was 85th in 22:53, and junior Haley Lawson (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) was 90th in 23:08.
“The men are really beginning to come together,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. “We’re happy with their performance. The women went out pretty hard, and hit a wall at the two-mile mark. We have to focus on the last part of the race as an area where we need to improve.”
The Corsairs will take next weekend off, returning to action Saturday, October 8th at the James Early Invitational at Westfield State.
