WESTFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men finished seventh out of 23 teams, while the women only had four runners and did not post an official team score at the James Early Invitational at Stanley Park Saturday afternoon.
The Corsair men scored 190 points in the five-mile race. Bowdoin won the race with 29 points, Massachusetts Maritime was next with 87, Susquehanna was third with 146, Vassar fourth with 158, host Westfield State fifth with 160, and Coast Guard sixth with 184. UMass Dartmouth was followed by Bridgewater State with 191 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute with 193.
Senior Casey Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug HS) led the men, finishing 19th in 28:06. Junior Brian Vatcher (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was 27th in 28:32, junior Dave Brooks (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) was 28th in 28:35, sophomore Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) 60th in 29:28, junior Matt Coble (Marion, MA) 67th in 29:36, senior Mike LeBlanc (Fall River, MA) 107th in 30:45, sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) 108th in 30:47, junior Mike Doyle (Quincy, MA) 144th in 32:13, and sophomore Matt Gagnon (Tewksbury, MA) 153rd in 32:46.
Sophomore Caitlin Schutz (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) led the women, finishing 56th in 20:57. Sophomore Libby DeBoalt (Middletown, MA/Masconomet HS) was 96th in 22:02, junior Haley Lawson (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) was 125th in 22:50, and freshman Katie Lynch (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was 147th in 23:29. Freshman Liz Pettigrew (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) and sophomore Stacey Sarber (Oakdale, CT/Montville HS) missed the race due to injury.
“Casey and Caitlin had good days,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. “(Freshman) Steve Bucher (Mechanicsburg, PA) was running well, but he turned his ankle and couldn’t finish, or we would have done even better. We’re in a heavy training period right now. Later on, we’ll pull back, and we should respond pretty well. We’re getting there, and we’re learning how to race better.”
The Corsairs will return to action next weekend at the Clark Invitational in Worcester.
