CORSAIRS 3RD, 4TH AT LITTLE EAST, 6TH, 7TH AT ALLIANCE
WESTFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s cross country team finished third at the Little East Conference meet and sixth at the New England Alliance Championships and the women tied for fourth at the LEC meet and were seventh at the New England Alliance Championships at Stanley Park Saturday afternoon.
The Corsair men finished with 79 at the five-team LEC meet, which was won by Keene State with 19 points. They scored 133 points at the Alliance meet. The UMD women tied with UMass Boston, with 119 points each, in the five-team LEC field. Keene State was first with 23 points. The women had 177 points at the Alliance meet.
Senior Casey Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug HS) led the Corsair men, finishing 18th in 27:02.62. Junior Brian Vatcher (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was 19th in 27:08.86, junior Dave Brooks (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) was 25th in 27:37.61, sophomore Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) was 36th in 28:16.74, freshman Steve Bucher (Mechanicsburg, PA) was 45th in 28:40.22, junior Matthew Coble (Marion, MA) was 50th in 28:55.54, senior Mike LeBlanc (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was 60th in 29:19.07, sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) was 73rd in 30:09.01, sophomore Matt Gagnon (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Valley HS) was 82nd in 30:50.22, and junior Mike Doyle (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS) was 89th in 31:44.93.
Sophomore Caitlin Schutz (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) led the UMD women, finishing 17th in 20:40.68. Sophomore Libby DeBoalt (Middletown, MA/Masconomet HS) was 25th in 21:25.94, junior Haley Lawson (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley HS) was 45th in 22:43.43, freshman Liz Pettigrew (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) was 56th in 23:24.77, and freshman Katie Lynch (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was 57th in 23:33.27.
“I thought we did pretty well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. “Right now, the two teams are in different phases of development. The men are right on the edge of becoming pretty good. Steve Bucher ran his best race ever today, and Eric Holmes also ran a great race. The women did a very good job holding things together, with our number one runner, Stacey Sarber (Oakdale, CT/Montville HS), ill. Caitlin Schutz ran well, as did Libby DeBoalt and Haley Lawson.
The Corsairs will compete at the ECAC Championships next week and the NCAA Division III Regionals November 12th.
