Reed leads UMass Dartmouth's cross country runners during 1999 season

(Dartmouth, MA) - Competing on their own home course at the NCAA Division III New England Regionals, the Corsairs closed out their 1999 cross country season with a 25th place finish for the women and a 21st place finish for the men. The New England championship race at UMass Dartmouth concluded another competitive season for Coach Jon Hird's cross country runners.

Senior Sonya Hinman (Framingham, MA) was the Corsairs' top woman runner, placing 136th in a field of 256 women runners with a time of 20:41. On the men's side, junior captain Jeff Reed (Westport, MA) was the Corsairs' top finisher, taking 100th place overall from a field of 218 men with a time of 27:02.16.

The campus cross country course was also the site of the Corsairs' annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational held in mid-September. While Messiah College was taking the women's race, UMass Dartmouth's women finished 12th overall. On the men's side, the Coast Guard Academy captured first place with the Corsairs taking 8th place overall.

Reed was the Corsairs' top male runner for the 1999 season, taking the top spot for UMass Dartmouth at five of the Corsairs' invitational events. Reed's top finishes were a pair of 10th-place efforts at the Alliance Championship on Oct. 30 and the Rhode Island College on Sept. 25. Three of Reed's teammates distinguished themselves during the season with solid efforts, including senior Josh Hill (Templeton, MA), freshman Jeremy Nute (Westborough, MA) and sophomore Pat Gallagher (Fairhaven, MA). Nute's best effort was a 23rd at the RIC Invitational (28:17), while Hill registered a 16th at the Tufts Invitational (29:17). A 13th place effort at the RIC Invitational (27:34) was Gallagher's top effort for the year.
