UMass Dartmouth men's Fall golf team turns in several strong performances at invitational tournaments.

(Dartmouth, MA) - Although the UMass Dartmouth men's golf team went 0-3 in matches during the Fall 2000 season, the Corsairs turned in several solid efforts at a series of invitational tournaments.

Among the best efforts by Coach Paul Fistori's men's team were a first place finish at the Franklin Pierce Invitational, a third place at their own UMass Dartmouth Invitational, a sixth place at the ECAC Qualifier and a season-ending 22nd place finish at the New England Championships.

In the Corsairs' 12 competitive rounds of collegiate golf during the Fall 2000 season, Joey Lopes (Sagamore Beach, Ma) turned in the team's lowest stroke average. In ten rounds of golf for UMass Dartmouth, Lopes averaged an 81.4, including a 78 at the Southern Maine Invitational and a 79 at the Williams College Invitational.

With an average score of 82.7 in 9 rounds, Ryan Derosier (Bridgewater, MA) finished the season with the Corsairs' second lowest average score. Derosier's best round on the season was a 75 at the Southern Maine Invitational. At 82.9 over 8 rounds, Andy Bell (Framingham, MA) finished third helped by an 80 at Williams College and an 81 at Southern Maine.

Rounding out the top golfers for the Fall 2000 season for the Corsairs were Ryan Pelletier (Acushnet, MA)(83.5), Kyle Skubus (New Haven, CT) (88.7), James Cormier (E. Longmeadow, MA) (89.0) and Jeff Hankins (90.2). For 42.5 rounds during the Fall season, UMass Dartmouth averaged 85.7 strokes.

UMass Dartmouth's top performance in an invitational came on Oct. 18 in the Franklin Pierce Invitational held in Jaffrey, NH. From a field of 8 teams competing in a nine-hole event, the Corsairs placed first with a score of 166. Lopes had the low individual round at 38 followed by Skubus (41), Pelletier (42), and Hankins (45). Another strong team effort came in the University of Southern Maine Invitational held October 1 at Gorham (ME) Country Club. The Corsairs finished fourth overall from a field of 13 teams with Derosier tied with three others for third low individual at 75. Lopes came in at 78 with Bell at 81 and Cormier at 82.

The Corsairs finished sixth overall at the annual ECAC Men's Open Southern New England Qualifying Tournament held on Sept. 28. UMass Dartmouth shot a combined score of 330 to finish sixth in a field of 15 teams. Lopes, Bell and Pelletier tied for low honors among the Corsairs with rounds of 82, while Derosier carded an 84.

Led by Derosier's 59th place finish at 81-81-162, UMass Dartmouth placed 22nd overall in a field of 46 teams at the annual New England Championships held Oct. 23-24 at Captains Golf Course in Brewster, MA. The Corsairs shot a two-round total of 662, 338-324. In addition to Derosier, the Corsairs' top efforts came from Bell (82-86-168, T 107th), Lopes (84-87-171 T 134th), Pelletier (91-80-171, T 134th) and Skubus (95-77-172, T 143rd).
