UMass Dartmouth posts 2-0 mark in team events and 4 top 10 finishes during
Spring '01 season
(Dartmouth, MA) -- UMass Dartmouth's men's golf team posted a pair of
victories in head to head competition and had four top ten finishes in New
England intercollegiate golf tournaments during the Spring 2001 season.
Coach Paul Fistori's Corsairs competed in seven events during the spring
portion of their season, which was highlighted by a fifth place finish in
the annual Massachusetts Intercollegiate Championship.
Led by senior captain Joey Lopes' (Sagamore Beach, MA) round of 76, the
Corsairs took fifth overall from a field of 20 teams in the annual
Massachusetts Intercollegiate Championship held April 19 at Stowe (MA)
Acres Country Club. Finishing third overall among the individual scorers
for the event, Lopes was UMass Dartmouth's low man for the tournament.
Senior Mark Loud (Pocasset, MA) was UMass Dartmouth's second best score
with an 82, followed by an 83 from sophomore Ryan Derosier (Bridgewater,
MA) and an 84 from freshman Andy Bell (Framingham, MA). The Corsairs fired
a combined team score of 325 to place fifth behind team champion Boston
College (307).
UMass Dartmouth also turned in a third place performance at the Worcester
Polytechnic Institute Invitational played April 25 at Holden Hills Country
Club in Worcester, MA. Derosier was the Corsairs' low man at 77 with
Pelletier two back at 79. Lopes carded an 83 and Bell was fourth at 84.
The Corsairs also finished sixth in the District One Shootout hosted by
Williams College on April 28-29.
Country Club of New Bedford, the Corsairs' home course for the season, also
played host to a pair of invitational tournaments during the Spring 2001
season. From a field of five teams on April 2, the Corsairs tied for first
with Roger Williams University at 346. Ryan Pelletier's round of 79 was
UMass Dartmouth's low round followed by an 88 from Derosier, an 89 from
Lopes and a 90 from Bell. On April 9, the Corsairs finished third in a
four-team field led by Pelletier's 86. Derosier, freshman Kyle Skubas (New
Haven, CT) and Lopes each carded 87's for a team total of 347.
After competing in each of the Corsairs' nine events during the Spring 2001
season with a stroke average of 82.9 per 18 holes, Derosier edged out Lopes
and Pelletier for the low average for the season. With eight rounds in the
80's and a season's best 77 at WPI, Derosier finished .4 strokes ahead of
Pelletier, who had an 83.3 stroke average. Derosier had a pair of rounds
at 79 and six rounds in the 80's. Lopes finished third in stroke average
at 83.8, which included a 76 at the Massachusetts Intercollegiate
Championships and a 79 in the District One Shootout.
Lopes' round of 76 tied Bell and Skubus for the Corsairs' lowest rounds of
the season. Bell shot his 76 at the Yale Invitational Tournament, while
Skubus carded his 76 in the season-ending matches against MIT and Stonehill
College.
Rounding out the Corsairs' other top stroke averages for the season were
Loud at 85.3, Bell at 86.5 and Skubus at 86.6.
