2002 Season Review

UMass Dartmouth's men's golf team put together one of its most successful seasons in recent memory during the Spring 2002 season.

Among the highlights for Coach Paul Fistori's team were the Corsairs' first Massachusetts Intercollegiate championship along with first-place finishes in three different invitational tournaments and a pair of intercollegiate match victories as well. UMass Dartmouth also placed seventh overall at the District One Shootout at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, MA.

After opening the 2002 spring season by capturing the UMass Dartmouth Invitational, the Corsairs traveled to Stow Acres for the annual Massachusetts Intercollegiate Championships on April 11. From the 20-team field, UMass Dartmouth tied with Williams College at 316 and won the championship by virtue of the tiebreaker using the team's fifth score. Brent Amaral (Westport, MA) was the tournament medalist at 70, followed by Kyle Skubus (New Haven, CT) at 80, Ryan Pelletier (Acushnet, MA) at 82 and Andrew Bell (Framingham, MA) at 84. Captain Ryan Derosier's (Bridgewater, MA) 86, although it didn't count in the team score, won the tiebreaker for UMass Dartmouth over Williams College giving the Corsairs their first Massachusetts Intercollegiate title.

At the Worcester State Invitational on April 16, Amaral tied for medalist at 73 and won the playoff for medal honors on the second extra hole. Amaral finished the season with an average of 75.8 in seven rounds of competition, the lowest average by threes strokes on the team.

Skubus and Dan Cronin (Peabody, MA) both turned in their lowest rounds of the year on April 18 as the Corsairs captured the Franklin Pierce Invitational. Cronin and Skubus both carded rounds of 73 to share medalist honors. With Amaral shooting a 74 and Pelletier turning in a 77, UMass Dartmouth had four players shoot in the 70's and turned in a combined score of 297, the only sub-300 round of the season at 297. The Corsairs next lowest score was a 309 at the Worcester State Invitational.

Pelletier's 79 was the Corsairs' best score at the WPI Invitational on April 24 as UMass Dartmouth brought home another invitational title. Pelletier had UMass Dartmouth's second lowest average of the season, shooting an average of 78.8 in seven rounds. Bell was third in scoring average with an 81.7 in seven rounds, followed by Skubus (six rounds, 82.3) and Desrosier (five rounds, 82.6). Cronin played in two rounds and averaged an 80.

Amaral had another strong round of 77, six over par on the first day of the District One Shootout on April 27. But the Corsairs couldn't improve on their seventh place finish when the second day of the competition was rained out. Pelletier had an 80 while Bell shot an 82 and Derosier carded an 83. Amaral tied for 12th overall with his 77 and Pelletier tied for 21st with his 80 (+9).
