CORSAIRS PERFORM WELL AT NORTHEASTERN
BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s indoor track and field team turned in a few strong performances in the 2005-06 season opener at the Northeastern Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday.
Freshman Matt Gansenberg (Georgetown, MA/Hamilton-Wenham HS) broke the UMass Dartmouth indoor pole vault record on his first try, vaulting 12 feet even.
Two other student-athletes turned in personal best performances. Senior Casey Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug HS) ran 5000 meters in 16:03.60, while junior Brian Vatcher (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) ran 3000 meters in 9:09.74.
Among the women, freshman Teresa McGrath (Saugus, MA/Saugus HS) turned in the best performance, throwing the shot put 34 feet, six inches.
“We’ve only been practicing for two weeks, so this meet is a good way to get a report card as to where we are at,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. “Matt set a school record in the pole vault, while Casey and Brian both ran personal bests. It was good to get starting points for the people who are ready to go, and we’re still sorting things out and seeing where people belong.”
The Corsairs will compete at Harvard next Saturday.
