1999-2000 Season Review



Ken Scanzio earns fifth place finishes in ECAC and
New England Division III championships

(Dartmouth, MA) - Sophomore Ken Scanzio (North Attleboro, MA) saved his best for the last indoor track and field meet of the season and came away with the Corsairs' top individual finish of the 1999-2000 season.

Coach Jon Hird's indoor track and field season produced five male qualifiers to the ECAC Division III Championships with Scanzio�s high jump of 6-4, tying his personal best for the season, placing him fifth as the Corsairs' best finish of the year. Scanzio also picked up a fifth place finish (6-3) the previous week at the Men�s New England Division III Championships held Feb. 18-19 at Bates College.

Although he qualified for but didn't place in the ECAC event, UMass Dartmouth junior triple jumper Dan Almeida (South Attleboro, MA) picked up an eighth- place finish in the Men's New England Championships held Feb. 26 at Boston University. Almeida opened his season with a first-place finish at the Coast Guard Academy Invitational Dec 4 with a triple jump of 42-3. The following weekend, Almeida added an incredible two feet to his jump the previous week for a season's best mark of 44-3, although he finished second in the event. At the New England Division III Championships, Almeida placed fourth with a jump of 43-8. Almeida reached 43 10 1/2 for an eighth place finish at the Men's New Englands.

Also competing at the Men's New England's Championships, sophomore Tim Garcia (Fairhaven, MA) brought home the Corsairs' best finish of the event with a fourth place effort in the 55 meters (:06.61). Garcia also competed in the long jump, earning a sixth place finish with a leap of 20-7 1/2.

In the annual New England Alliance Championship Meet held Feb. 13, 2000 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, UMass Dartmouth finished fourth from an 11-team field consisting of Little East Conference and Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference teams. Capturing UMass Dartmouth�s only Alliance Championship, Almeida took first in the triple jump at 43-5 1/4, while teammate Orlando Rodriguez (Sharon, MA) placed second at 42-10 3/4.

Among the other top performers at the Alliance Championships were Scanzio�s second in the high jump (6-2 3/4), senior Pat Gallagher's (Fairhaven, MA) second in the 800 meters (1:59.75), senior Ethan Wren's (Gloucester, MA) second in the 55 meter hurdles (8.28) and Garcia�s fourth place in the long jump (21-7 1/4).
