UMASS DARTMOUTH LACROSSE DOWNS CURRY, 10-9

MILTON, MA–Junior midfielder Mark Lapointe (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) scored three goals and freshman midfielder Mike Santos (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter to cap a rally as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team came from behind to earn their first win of the season, defeating Curry, 10-9, at Walter Katz Field Wednesday.

Junior defenseman J.P. Desjardins (Rutland, VT/Rutland HS) and senior defenseman Rory Hirl (Acton, MA/Boxboro HS) keyed the Corsairs’ defense, which held the Colonels to two goals in the second half.  Desjardins also scored a key goal late in the second period.

“J.P. stripped his man of the ball and broke down field,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. “He drew out the goalie, but had no angle, so he shot the ball behind his back right into the corner of the net. It was one of those shots that you see on the highlights of the NCAA clips.”

Trailing, 9-8, the Corsairs scored the final two goals. Lapointe’s goal with 9:36 remaining tied the score, and Santos got the game winner, converting a pass from Ryan Trexler with 3:23 left.

" J.P's intensity and desire showed all day,” said Mahoney. “Johnny Morin of Curry absolutely dominated in the first half, and J.P. asked the coaches for the assignment, then shut him down the rest of the way. He was the spark that we needed.”

Curry out shot UMass Dartmouth, 31-30. Junior Craig Britton (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) made 14 saves for the Corsairs, while sophomore Steve Chase (Boston, MA/Boston Latin HS) made one. Colin Kott made 12 saves for the Colonels.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-2 with the victory, while Curry fell to 2-1. The Corsairs will host Mount Ida Saturday.
