Corsairs comeback falls short, MIT picks up first win, 7-3 over UMass Dartmouth

 (Dartmouth, MA) – Trailing 4-0 at halftime, UMass Dartmouth narrowed MIT’s lead to 5-2 with a pair of third-period goals but it wasn’t enough as the Engineers came away with a 7-3 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

 

The loss dropped UMass Dartmouth to 0-2 on the young season, while MIT picked a victory in its  first outing of the year.  Dylan Roden led the Engineers in scoring with a game-high three goals plus an assist, while Jonathan Stolmeier added a pair of goals and an assist.  Brennan Sherry and Tyler Sorba added single goals for MIT.  Zach Brewer came up with 13 saves in the MIT goal for the victory.  Mark Lapointe (Tyngsboro, MA) was the Corsairs’ leading scorer with a pair of goals plus a single goal from Mike Duffey (Holden, MA).  Jeff Pelton (Lowell, MA) added a pair of assists for the winless Corsairs.  Craig Britton (Ashland, MA) made eight saves in goal for UMass Dartmouth.

 

MIT built a 3-0 lead after the opening period and made it 4-0 at the break. In the third period, the Corsairs got goals from Duffy and Lapointe, but MIT managed one goal to maintain a three-goal lead (5-3) heading into the final quarter.  MIT outscored the Corsairs 2-1 in the last quarter to secure the victory.

 

UMass Dartmouth will look for its first win of the season next Wednesday when they travel to Milton to take on Curry College in a 3:30 pm start.  MIT will return to action on Tuesday when they take on Wentworth Institute at 4 pm.
