UMASS DARTMOUTH LACROSSE FALLS TO MOUNT IDA, 10-7

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–Mount Ida scored seven unanswered goals and then held off a late rally to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team, 10-7, at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs had overcome a 2-1 first-period deficit with three goals in the second period to take a 4-3 halftime lead.

Sophomore attackman Bobby Young (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) scored the first of his four goals to give UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead with 8:18 to go in the first period. He scored to tie the game with 9:05 in the second period, then capped a three-goal rally by scoring with 13:37 remaining in the third period to give the Corsairs a 5-3 advantage before the Mustangs rallied.

Leo Shidler, Alex Champagne and Brett Conley scored three goals within a span of two minutes and 50 seconds. Conley’s goal, with 4:01 left in the third period, gave Mount Ida the lead for good.

Conley and John Lightbown scored to make it 10-5 before the Corsairs rallied. Young and sophomore midfielder Ryan Connell (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) scored in the final two minutes to make it 10-7.

Freshman attackmen Mike Duffey (Holden, MA/Wachusett HS) and Jeff Pelton (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) scored UMD’s other goals. Pelton had two assists, while Duffey, Young and junior defenseman John Tisdell (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) added one each. Lightbown had three goals for the Mustangs, Conley and Shidler two each, and Matt Ramiero, Vince Pizzimenti and Alex Champagne each scored once.

“We didn’t play well in the second half,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. “We played well in the first half, but we didn’t follow it up in the second half. We have a young team, and we sat back and waited for someone to step up and make a play, and we can’t afford to do that. Hopefully, we’ll use this as a learning experience.”

Mount Ida out shot UMass Dartmouth, 29-19. Sophomore goalkeeper Steve Chase (Boston, MA/Boston Latin Academy) made 14 saves for the Corsairs, while Bryan Smith made 10 saves for the Mustangs.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 1-3 with the defeat, while Mount Ida improved to 1-1. The Corsairs will host Salve Regina Tuesday afternoon.
