UMASS DARTMOUTH LACROSSE FALLS TO SRU, 11-8

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–For the second consecutive game, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team saw a late rally fall short.

Salve Regina seized an early 5-0 lead and then held off a late comeback to defeat the Corsairs, 11-8, at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs scored three consecutive goals late in the second quarter to cut SRU’s lead to 5-3. Sophomore midfielder Nate Kirby (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS) put UMD on the board with 4:06 remaining in the first half. Junior midfielder Mark Lapointe (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) followed less than a minute later with the first of his four goals. Freshman attackman Mike Duffey (Holden, MA/Wachusett HS) then converted Kirby’s pass with 2:06 left in the first half to cut the Seahawks’ lead to two goals at the intermission.

SRU scored five of the next seven goals to take a 10-5 advantage with 12:57 remaining, The Corsairs came back again. Lapointe scored unassisted with 11:53 remaining and again with 5:49 to play. Junior defenseman J.P. Desjardins (Rutland, VT/Rutland HS) fired a shot past SRU goalkeeper Brian Walker to cut the lead to 10-8 with 4:35 left.

But the Seahawks got the final goal of the game. Josh Sallese scored for the fifth time with 1:41 remaining and SRU held on for the win.

Sophomore attackman Bobby Young (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) got UMD’s other goal, while Kirby had two assists and sophomore midfielder Ryan Connell (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) had one.

Ryan Comerford, the starting goaltender for the Seahawks’ hockey team, had two goals for SRU, as did Ben Kelley. Comerford had three assists, while Daniel Vince added two.

“We did really well, considering the fact that we have 10 or 11 kids not playing,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. “A lot of our guys stepped up and showed great effort. Most of the people we have playing are freshmen and sophomores, and this is their first real experience playing. At the start of the game, we didn’t do anything. We just sat back, and we weren’t intense enough. We picked up the intensity later.”

Salve Regina out shot the Corsairs, 43-23. Walker made 11 saves, while UMass Dartmouth got 17 from starting goalie Craig Britton (Jr. Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) and two more from sophomore Steve Chase (Boston, MA/Boston Latin Academy).

“We have two excellent keepers,” said Mahoney. “Craig went to the sideline to fix his stick, so Steve came in for him. Both of them did a good job of stopping shots.”

UMass Dartmouth fell to 1-4 with the defeat, while Salve Regina improved to 2-3. The Corsairs will take the rest of the week off from competition, and return to action next Tuesday afternoon at Lasell.
