Bridgewater, MAIn collegiate men’s soccer action this afternoon, the Bridgewater State College Bears snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-goal outburst midway through the second half, as BSC defeated UMass-Dartmouth, 4-1, from Swenson Field.  With the win, Bridgewater improves to 9-6 on the season, while UMass slips to 4-9-2.

Freshman midfielder Jon Nutting (Rockland, MA) picked up the game-winner for the Bears as he gave BSC a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute with his sixth goal of the season.  Nutting’s goal was the first of three tallies that came in a ten minute span for the Bears in the second half.  Senior Mike Quinn (Weymouth, MA) put the insurance markers on the board for Bridgewater as he scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart at 75:08 and at 76:34.  Quinn now has a team-leading nine goals on the season.

UMass actually got on the board first as senior forward Tiago Pinto (New Bedford, MA) picked up his seventh goal of the season off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Frank Giampa (Norwood, MA) in the 16th minute.  Sophomore midfielder Takashi Suzuki (Kanuma, Japan) got the equalizer for the Bears in the 38th minute with an assist going to senior midfielder Topher Paone (South Easton, MA).  For Paone it was his first of two assists in the game as he also assisted on Quinn’s first goal.

Bridgewater outshot the Corsairs by a margin of 20 to 9, and held an 11 to 4 shot advantage in the second half.

BSC sophomore goaltender Drew Pontbriand (Fairhaven, MA) picked up his second win of the season as he is perfect on the year with a record of 2-0.  Pontbriand turned aside seven shots in the game.  Sophomore keeper Kyle Fossey (Townsend, MA) registered seven saves in the loss for the Corsairs.

Bridgewater State wraps up the regular season on Saturday afternoon as they host Salem State in a critical MASCAC game.  Bridgewater is guaranteed a spot in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament. A Bridgewater win, however, over the Vikings and a Mass. College loss to Framingham would give BSC the third seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament.
