CORSAIRS FALL TO ECSU, 2-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Eastern Connecticut State scored an early goal in each half and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s soccer team, 2-1, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.
Fotis Anastasiou put the Warriors ahead, 1-0, 6:13 into the first half when he headed a cross from Nick Rezendes past Corsair goalkeeper Kyle Fossey (So. Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS).
Anastasiou struck again eight minutes into the second half. He took a pass from Elvis Perndoj and beat Fossey with a shot just inside the post at the 53:29 mark.
UMass Dartmouth scored seven minutes later. A foul in the penalty area gave the Corsairs a penalty kick, and senior forward Tiago Pinto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford Vocational) scored at 60:20 to make it 2-1.
ECSU had to play a man short for the final 18 minutes after Kyle Bedini was issued a red card and sent off at the 71:51 mark, but the Corsairs were unable to equalize.
UMass Dartmouth out shot the Warriors, 13-9. ECSU goalkeeper Marcin Kaczerski had seven saves to three for Fossey.
The Corsairs dropped to 2-3, 0-1 in LEC play with the defeat. Eastern Connecticut State improved to 4-2 and 1-0 in the Little East. UMD will return to action when they host St. Joseph’s Tuesday afternoon.
