                                                 CORSAIRS OUTSCORE MASS MARITIME, 4-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts scored three times in the second half and went on to a 4-1 victory over Massachusetts Maritime at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.

Junior defender Jayr Fernandes (Dorchester, MA/Burke HS) headed a pass from senior midfielder Jon Hafer (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) high into the net three minutes into the second half, igniting the Corsairs’ offense.

UMass Dartmouth had taken a 1-0 lead with 30 minutes remaining in the first half when sophomore forward Lee Soares (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth GS) converted a pass from senior forward Tiago Pinto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford Vocational) and scored from short range.

Pinto gave UMD a 3-0 lead when he scored from five yards out at the 64:21 mark. Andrew Del Prete sent a 15-yard shot into the net past Corsair sophomore goalkeeper Adam Rolfe (Southwick, MA/Southwick HS), spoiling Rolfe’s bid for a shutout with 92 seconds remaining. Freshman defender Jeremy Soares (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion HS) replied in kind for UMass Dartmouth, scoring the final goal of the game with 48 seconds remaining.

“We needed a win,” said UMD Head Coach Ray Cabral, whose team had been shut out in each of their last three games, all defeats. “Our midfield did a great job. In the first half, when we had the ball, we didn’t create as many opportunities. In the second half, we created more space and then pushed the ball forward, and put the ball in the back of the net.”

The Corsairs out shot MMA, 13-6. Rolfe had four saves, while Mass Maritime’s John VanDolson and Rob Johnson combined for six.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 4-6 with the victory, while the Buccaneers dropped to 2-6 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Little East Conference opponent UMass Boston Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
