CORSAIRS BLANK ST. JOSEPH’S
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s soccer team scored a goal in each half and blanked St. Joseph’s of Maine, 2-0, at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Lee Soares (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) opened the scoring for the Corsairs. He took a pass from junior forward Dennis Toomey (Edgartown, MA/Martha’s Vineyard HS) and beat SJC goalkeeper Brian White to make it 1-0.
Freshman midfielder Thomas DeMiranda (Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) made it 2-0 at the 64:17 mark. He headed home a cross from senior midfielder Jon Hafer (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) to account for the final score.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Rolfe (Southwick, MA/Southwick HS) made four saves for the shutout. White was credited with four saves for the Monks, who were out shot, 14-6.
”It was nice to win, 2-0, we tightened it up defensively,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ray Cabral. “We had some good performances. Jon Hafer had a big game on the right side for us today, and (junior) Jayr Fernandes (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and (sophomore midfielder) Andrew Ventura (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) played well. We didn’t take advantage of all of our chances, and we have to do a better job of converting them.”
The Corsairs evened their record at 3-3 with the victory, while St. Joseph’s fell to 1-4-1.
UMD will return to action when they visit Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State Saturday afternoon.
