NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Southern Maine took a 3-1 halftime lead and made it stand up for a 4-1 Little East Conference men’s soccer victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at a rainy Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.
Adam Bial’s goal 2:40 into the game gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead when he scored from the corner of the penalty box. Less than six minutes later, USM scored again as Sinisa Bajic converted a pass from Greg Cox and sent a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Adam Rolfe (Southwick, MA/Southwick HS).
Junior forward Jayr Fernandes (Dorchester, MA/Burke HS) countered for the Corsairs, scoring with 20 minutes left in the first half to draw UMD within a goal. But Cox scored at the 30:09 mark to make it 3-1.
Chris Lapointe scored the only goal of the second half, converting Bajic’s pass at the 56:51 mark.
UMass Dartmouth out shot Southern Maine, 29-16. Rolfe made eight saves, while Husky goalkeeper Chris Willard was credited with 18.
The Corsairs fell to 4-7-1 and 0-4-1 in LEC play, while USM improved to 3-7-2 and 1-2-1. UMD will return to action when they host Tufts Tuesday afternoon.
